1. What is an LED Filament Bulb?
An LED filament light bulb is an LED lamp that is designed to resemble a traditional incandescent light bulb but with high efficiency LEDs.
They have a wide angle of light distribution, typically 300°. They are also more efficient than many other LED lamps.
2. Main Components and Parts of LED Filament Bulbs
So, what is an LED filament bulb made of?
Probably, this is one of the most common questions people want and need to know. I will make it straightforward for you here.
An LED Filament bulb is an assembly of different parts and components.
You need to know each of these parts by name and the importance. That’s what I want to share with you now.
2.1 Glass Shade
The glass shade is an typical feature of LED filament bulb.
Some people may ask, can it be PC?
Well, they do exist. But, in our opinion, they could not call LED filament bulbs.
Besides totally different manufacturing processes, a PC shade could not have high light transmission as a glass shade, which could maximum present the beauty of the LED filaments when lighting up.
Today when people change their old school Edison bulbs to LED replacements. They actually expect to have similar feelings while benefit from new LED technology.
That’s why, despite being fragile, glass shades are still one of the most essential components for an LED filament lamp.
2.2 LED filaments
The LED filaments may look all similar but could actually be quite different.
They are mainly made up of substrate, LED Chips and phosphor.
Different substrate materials could affect the heat conduction and light conductivity of the LEDs.
The quality, quantity and size of LEDs will decide the light output and light decay.
And the phosphor decides the final light quality, including CCT and SDCM.
2.3 Gas
When I said gas, I didn’t mean the air we breathe in every day and every moment. I meant the glass shades are evacuated and filled with inert gas (mostly Helium and Nitrogen).
You may ask, why?
Well, as we all know, the LEDs will produce heat when lighting on. And different from LED SMD bulbs which use aluminum heatsink to help the heat goes out.
The LED filament bulbs are using gas to reduce heat. Thus creating a cooling system for the LEDs to have high lumen maintenance and a longer lifetime.
It is worth noting that many manufacturers nowadays omit this process or fill it with only a small amount of gas in order to save cost, which is very likely to have quality issue in the long run.
2.4 LED Driver
The working voltage of LED filaments is different from mains input. So a driver is always needed.
Different manufacturers have their own driver solutions, which will decide the light bulbs performance and lifespan.
2.5 Lamp Socket
The LED filament bulbs are mainly using lighting fittings shown in the photo below.
E27 Edison Screw Cap, named after Thomas Edison, is used worldwide in a wide range of applications.
The SES E14 Edison Screw Cap is often used for smaller decorative fittings, chandeliers, and appliance bulbs.
B22 Bayonet Cap, well known for its “push and twist” action, is used on most regular light bulbs.
It is 22mm diameter with two locating lugs. The “small b22 bayonet cap” (SBC or B15d) is very similar but only 15mm wide.
The socket materials are usually Nickel Plated Brass or aluminum nickel plating.
3. Advantages/Features of LED Filament Bulbs
With the old fashioned bulb look, you can not go wrong with LED filament bulbs.
On or off, these bulbs give the guise of classic traditional incandescent bulbs. Enjoy the LED technology without giving up your familiar atmosphere and room ambiance.
With high efficiency LEDs, those filament bulbs are not just looking great but can be very bright, they could also be dimmed to create the atmosphere that you desire.
The LED Filament bulbs have many advantages over other light sources.
You can use them on almost any lighting luminaries and making them just more gorgeous.
4. Types of LED Filament Bulbs
4.1 Glass Bulb Shapes
As replacement of incandescent bulbs, the LED filament bulbs share the same regular bulb shapes as showed in the photo below.
There are also some new bulb shapes for LED filament bulb itself.
4.2 Glass finishing
The glasses of LED filament bulbs have several finishing, including but not limited to, clear, amber/gold, milky, frosted/matt, smokey gray, mirror top(silver/gold/copper/black) and colorful ones.
4.3 LED Filament Types
The LED filaments are also available with short stick filaments, long stick filaments and spiral filaments.
And for different bulb shapes, the array of LED filaments could also be quite different.
5. Manufacturing process of LED filament bulbs
5.1 Glass Cleaning And Drying
After incoming inspection, all glass will be thoroughly cleaned and dried.
Then they will be stored on grid plates to avoid rubbing against each other, waiting for production.
5.2 Filaments Spot Welding
The LED filaments are stored in containers of constant temperature and humidity.
Then they will be welded to the glass mounts with wrist wraps worn by the operators for protection of the LEDs.
The filaments will be slightly adjusted to good shape. And will have light up test before sealing.
5.3 Seal & Exhaust & Helium filling
Now comes the most important part.
With glass bulbs and filament mounts in the right place, the machine starts running and finish the whole sealing process itself.
Which, includes the cooling system created by the filled inert gas.
5.4 Driver assembling
The drivers will be attached to the glass bulbs and protected with insulation tape.
Sometimes, heat conduction glue will also be used for small space sockets or for big power drivers.
5.5 Lamp Socket fixed
The lamp sockets will be filled with welding mud powder.
Then they will be attached to the glass bulbs with drivers inside, being fixed and heated on the machines before the mud is dried.
5.6 Lamp Light test
All bulbs will have a quick light up test to see if the power is as rated under working voltage.
5.7 Aging test
All bulbs will have aging tests no less than 6 hours.
This could quickly detect potential faulty issues.
5.8 Cleaning and Packaging
Finally, before putting into the boxes, all bulbs will have the final visual check.
They will be thoroughly examined in the light, removed all stains, dirty and serious scratches caused during production.
6. How to choose the right LED Filament Bulbs?
6.1 LED Filaments Color Temperature/CCT
LED filament bulbs mainly have below three CCT ranges to choose from.
Super Warm White: 1800K, 2000K, 2200K
Warm White: 2700K, 3000K
Natural White: 4000K, 5000K, 6500K
Note: It’s important to know different glass colors will affect the final CCT. Take amber (or you call gold) glass for reference, the final CCT would be about 200K lower than the actual LEDs CCT.
6.2 LED Filaments Working Voltage
You can always choose the voltage according to your market.
For places where the voltage is not stable, Amoluce could also provide the right driver solution to avoid fluctuations.
For dimmable, you could only have single voltage, i.e., 110~130V or 220~240V.
For not dimmable, you could have wide dimming range, i.e., 90~250V.
6.3 Types of LED bulb fittings
You can always choose according to the regular sockets of your market.
Below are the available socket options for Amoluce LED filament bulbs, please note that for small size sockets there are space limitations for the driver, so the maximum power and some performance may be affected.
Edison Screw: E10, E12, E14, E26, E27
Bayout: B22, Ba15d
6.4 LED Filament Bulbs Color Rendering Index
There are always CRI80 and CRI90 options available.
Just choose the one you need.
But it should be noted that for CRI90 the lumen output is about 20% less than CRI80 for the same specifications.
If you need high lumens as well as high CRI, Amoluce could also provide a customized solution for you.
6.5 LED Filament Bulbs Dimmable
Born to replace incandescent bulbs, LED filament bulbs are available with dimming functions.
It is very important that the LED filament bulbs could well match the dimmers of your market.
You could ask for the dimmer compatibility list from your suppliers to avoid matching issues.
Usually, the LED filament bulbs come with TRIAC dimming. Amoluce also provides other dimming options like System dimming, 3 Steps dimming, remote dimming and Wifi Smart Dimming to meet different lighting purposes.
6.6 Flicker Issue
The flicker here doesn’t refer to any quality or performance issues, which could be seen by eyes.
The flicker here is usually not easy to see by eyes, at least for most of people. But can simply judge by your mobile phone camera.
This Flicker issue is very often ignored. But it is very important for user experience.
At Amoluce, all no Dimmable bulbs are no flicker. And for dimmable versions, there are flicker and no flicker options as costs are different.
Note: Amoluce LED filament bulbs could be 100% ZERO flicker, instead of low flicker index as the regulations allow.
7. LED Filament Bulbs FAQ: What You Must Know when buying LED Filament Bulbs
7.1 Can LED Filament Bulbs used outdoor or wet places like bathroom?
There are some LED filament bulbs could be used for outdoor, like the LED string lights.
It is not suggested to use in wet places like the bathroom.

LED filament bulbs are a direct replacement of many light bulbs including LED SMD bulbs, CFL and the old incandescent bulbs.
So you could always install them like install other light sources.
7.3 How to calculate the LED filament bulbs when replacing my halogen/CFL/LED bulbs?
When considering replacement, always check the lumen output which is clearly marked on the packaging.
If you are not sure about it, just provide details of your old bulbs and find the answer.
7.4 Can LED filament bulbs used in any fixtures? Including Enclosed fixtures?
LED filament bulbs are not suggested to use in enclosed fixtures.
It is not good for air circulation and would speed up the light decay of the bulbs.
7.5 When I buy LED, should I buy based on watts or lumens?
Always buy based on lumens, instead of watts.
Lumens decide the brightness of the bulbs while watts decide your energy bill.
So, for the same watts, choose the higher lumen ones.
7.6 What is the lifespan of LED filament bulbs?
Well, this depends on different manufacturers.
At Amoluce, unless declared, all LED filament bulbs are designed for 25,000hrs lifetime, yet the ErP 6,000hrs testing shows they could also be declared as 30,000hrs.
7.7 What is the most common reason LEDs fail/flicker?
There could be many reasons.
First, you need to judge the types of problems. For example, does the flicker only occur during dimming if it is dimmable?
